Q: Can my son/daughter participate in sports if they go to St. Andrew?
A: Yes!! Students at St. Andrew can still participate in sports or band though the city of Tecumseh or through Johnson County Central ("JCC") schools. St. Andrew school teachers and staff have a good working relationship with the staff and administration at JCC. If there is a sports or activity you want your child to participate in, please let our staff know and we can work to make it happen.
Q: Does St. Andrew School provide transportation for students?
A: At this time St. Andrew does not provide a bus for transporting students. However, the St. Andrew staff has a good working relationship with JCC and JCC buses have transported St. Andrew students in the past for field trips in the fall and spring. If transportation is an issue for you, please reach out to Father Clinch or Kathi Mercure and we can try to help.
Q: Does St. Andrew have the same technology as the public school?
A: St. Andrew students have weekly computer classes with our new computers that we received from the Diocese. We also received 15 new iPads from generous benefactors and a grant that provides sufficient iPads for each student enrolled at our school. Even the Pre-K have access to the iPads. Students learn typing, internet safety, and other basic computer skills. Each class room has a Smart Board for the students to utilize in their classroom instruction.
Q: Is the education as good at St. Andrew as the public school?
A: The students at St. Andrew receive an excellent religious and core-subject education. The class sizes are smaller than public school, so the children receive more one-on-one attention with their teachers. The teachers also have the ability to individualize instruction based on your child's needs.
Every year the students in grades 3-6 take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) in the spring which evaluates students on Vocabulary, Word Analysis, Reading Comprehension, Listening, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. The students at St. Andrew consistently test above grade level on these standardized tests.
Q: How will my child fit in at the public school if they attend St. Andrew Catholic School?
A: Change can always be difficult, but remember that children are resilient. Your child is not the first one to make the transition from Catholic school to public school, and he/she won't be alone. Most St. Andrew students successfully make the transition and flourish socially and academically at public school. The St. Andrew students meet their public school counterparts in after school sports and activities and summer sports activities. St. Andrew students take part in various events with the public school throughout the year as well; such as track and field day.
