In 1890, 14 Polish Families built the first church on land donated by Robert Smart (for whom the town Smartville was named). The first church was dedicated on October 7, 1890 by Father Jakimowicz, a Polish-speaking priest from the Diocese of Omaha, because at the time the Diocese of Lincoln did not have any Polish-speaking priests. Then those same families built a rectory because they wanted a resident pastor. The Holy Mass was important to them as the History of the Diocese relates, “The Celebration of the Sacred Liturgy ranked high in the hierarchy of values of these Polish people.” Many parishioners helped to build the current church and it was dedicated by Bishop Louis Kucera on October 7, 1947. Truly an amazing labor of love! And almost 30 years ago, parishioners took part in a renovation project guided by Fr. Hain which included tuck-pointing and roof repairs, the altar furnishings (built by Fr. Hain), new carpet, paint, and other interior work. The church was then rededicated by Bishop Glennon Flavin on October 7, 1989. On October 7, 2015 St. Mary Church celebrated 125 years since her founding. Most recently an interior renovation began in 2018 with the dedication of a new altar on December 9, 2018. We look back with gratitude at our history and the work accomplished by those who have served this church.
